Lunch with president (대통령과 함께 식사) and Gardening(텃밭에서)

우연하게 학교 야외 식당 테이블에서 클린턴 대통령과 함께 식사를 하게 되었다. 저만치서 일본출신 여자 청소부가 일을 하고 있는 것이 보인다.

Coincidentally, I ate with President Clinton at the school canteen table. I can see that a female janitor from Japan is working.

 

 

“Mr. President Clinton,

It’s very nice to meet you and to have a lunch together.

Do you know one of our employees who work around campus as a cleaner is a Japanese woman? She is so kind and works very diligently and helps students whenever they need something.

Should we give our diligent and kind female worker even a small exemplary award?”

 

President Clinton said of course it was the right thing to do.

After dinner, we leave our seats and chat, but suddenly the stage is our hometown Museom Village, Yeongju. As I guide, I ask several questions.

 

“Sir, what do you think about Korea?”

 

“Korea is an amazing country. I want to come here and live for a while, learn and experience many things. I think Korea has a diverse and dynamic culture. The old traditional village has an old scent, and in modern things such as semiconductor, it is developing dynamically and moving forward unparalleled. Various festivals in the countryside, BTS singing and dancing that are currently active on the international stage, and dazzling achievements in the field of movies and music, especially classical music, are like a miracle.”

 

“Thank you for your compliments on Korea. What else about Korea makes you attractive?”

 

“I liked the bibimbap with fried egg and young radish kimchi, which I ate on the global campus of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies earlier with you. I think Korean food is characterized by harmony. The light noodle soup served with bibimbap was also very impressive. We don't have that. The simple yet light taste will make me crave the moment it hits the tip of my tongue.

And the young radishes growing in Professor Kim's garden I went with looked fresh too. It feels like a miracle to make summer kimchi with it. Among Korean foods, kimchi is the best. The variety of vegetables from the garden was also impressive. In Korea, like you, professor, everyone has a small vegetable garden like this, so they are self-sufficient in vegetables?“

 

 

“No. It has become a habit since I was a child, working in the fields with my father, mother and brothers. My father always said that farming is the best, and he said that if everyone grows a little more vegetables or grains than they need, the world will be very prosperous, there is no need to worry about food, and everyone can live well. Since then, wherever I have gone, I have cultivated small fields like this by hand, planting a little more vegetables than we need, eating them, and sharing them with our neighbors. In particular, I have foreign professors who come to my university to taste Korean vegetables. Some professors, when they go to their home country, take seeds of the Korean radish, Chinese cabbage, crown daisy, wild sesame leaves, etc., and plant seeds in their own garden to grow and eat. This is the simple Korean Wave or Hallyu that I do. Mr. president since you are also retired, how about buying the some Korean vegetable seeds you tasted today when you return to the United States? Does Mrs. Hillary like gardening? If she like it, it will be a bonus.”

 

 

Then, suddenly, Hillary, wearing short pants and light clothes, comes into my garden and picks small cherry tomatoes, lettuce, western lettuce, eggplant, and peppers. When I asked for some water to spray, I filled the watering can with water, and I handed it over to her. Then our hands touch each other's hands, glance at each other, and smile. The weather is very hot, but the sounds of mountain birds and cuckoos singing from the surrounding low mountains are fantastic. A beautiful woman working with me in my garden suddenly feels like the Garden of Eden.

I woke up from a dream screaming for pleasure.

 

우연하게 학교 야외 식당 테이블에서 클린턴 대통령과 함께 식사를 하게 되었다. 저만치서 일본출신 여자 청소부가 일을 하고 있는 것이 보인다.

 

“클린턴 대통령 각하,

만나서 함께 점심을 먹게 되어 너무 좋습니다.

캠퍼스 주변에서 청소부로 일하는 직원 중 일본인 여성이 있다는 것을 알고 있습니까? 그녀는 매우 친절하고 매우 열심히 일하며 학생들이 필요할 때마다 도와줍니다. 우리 부지런하고 친절한 여성 근무자에게 조그마한 모범상이라도 줘야겠지요?“

 

클링턴 대통령이 당연히 그렇게 하는 것이 도리라고 한다.

식사 후 자리를 떠나서 대화를 나누는데 갑자기 무대가 우리 고향 무섬마을이다. 내가 안내를 하면서 여러 가지 물어본다.

 

“대통령 각하 한국에 대해 어떻게 생각하세요?

 

“한국 놀라운 나라입니다. 여기 와서 잠시 살고 싶고 여러 가지를 배우고 경험하고 싶습니다. 한국은 다양하고 역동적인 문화가 있는 것 같아요. 오랜 전통 마을에 옛 향기가 나고 반도채 등 현대적인 것에서는 타의 추종을 불허할 정도로 다이내믹하게 발전하고 일취월장하고 있고요. 시골에서 행해지는 각종 페스티벌이나 최근에 국제무대에서 활약하는 노래하고 춤추는 BTS나 영화 분야나 음악 특히 클래식 분야에서 눈부신 업적은 기적 같아요.”

 

“한국에 대해서 칭찬을 많이 해주셔서 감사드립니다. 또 한국의 어떤 것이 당신을 매력적으로 느끼게 합니까?”

 

“아까 한국외대 캠퍼스에서 먹은 계란 프라이가 들어가고, 열무김치가 들어간 비빔밥이 좋았어요. 한국음식은 조화에 그 특징이 있는 거 같아요. 비빔밥에 곁들어 먹는 수프로 나온 가벼운 국수물도 퍽 인상적이었어요. 우리는 그런 거 없어요. 심플하면서도 담백한 맛이 혀끝에 닿는 순간 식욕이 콱 일어나게 하데요.

그리고 함께 간 김교수님의 텃밭에서 자라고 있는 열무도 싱싱해보였어요. 그것으로 여름김치를 만들다니 기적 같아요. 한국 음식 중에서 김치는 최고예요. 텃밭에서 나오는 각종 채소도 인상적이었어요. 한국에는 교수님 같이 누구나 다 이렇게 작은 텃밭을 가꾸어서 채소를 자급자족하나요?“

 

“아닙니다. 저는 어릴 때부터 아버지랑, 엄마랑 형제들이랑 밭에서, 들에서 일을 해 와서 버릇이 되었어요. 아버지는 늘 농사는 천하지대본이라고 하시면서 사람은 누구나 자기가 먹는 것보다 조금만 더 많이 채소나 곡식을 재배하면 세상은 아주 풍요롭고 식량 걱정할 필요 없고 누구나 다 잘 살 수 있다고 했어요. 그 이후 저는 어디를 가나 이렇게 작은 밭을 손으로 일구어 우리가 필요한 것보다 조금 더 많이 채소를 심어서 먹고 이웃들에게 나누어줍니다. 특히 외대에 와서 가르치는 외국인 교수님들한테 한국 채소를 맛보게 합니다. 어떤 분은 고향 자기나라로 갈 때 한국 무, 배추, 쑥갓, 들깨 잎 등 찬국채소 씨앗을 가져가서 자기들 텃밭에 심어서 길러 먹는데요. 이게 바로 제가 하는 소박한 한류이지요. 대통령님도 은퇴하셨으니 미국 돌아가실 때 오늘 맛보신 채소 씨앗을 사가지고 가시면 어떨까요? 힐러리 부인이 텃밭 가꾸는 것을 좋아하나요? 좋아하시면 금상첨화일 텐데요.”

 

그때 갑자기 짧은 바지와 엷은 옷을 입으신 힐러리 여사가 밭으로 들어와서 작은 방울토마토도 따고 상치도 양상치도, 가지, 고추도 딴다. 내가 물도 좀 주라고 하니 하면서 물뿌리개에 물을 담아주니 손으로 건네받는다. 그때 서로 손이 닿아서 힐끗 쳐다보며 미소를 짓는다. 날씨는 무척 더우나 산새와 뻐꾸기가 주위 낮은 산에서 노래는 소리가 환상적으로 들린다. 아름다운 여성이 내 텃밭에서 함께 일을 하다니 여기가 갑자기 에덴동산 같은 기분이 든다.

좋아서 소리를 지르는 데 꿈에서 깨어났다.

Today, President Park Cheol suddenly sent me tickets to go to the Blue House. I thought that it would be better if I went with President Obama.

And during the day, I ate bibimbap in the school cafeteria with a beautiful professor Terezia from Slovakia, and went to my garden to pick vegetables and water them. I say that I take a picture of you and post it on Facebook, so she says when my mother in my hometown sees a picture of myself wearing short pants on your Facebook page, she says that she will smile instead of wearing proffer clothes working in the fields.

If you come back in the fall on the way, you must visit my beautiful hometown Museom Traditional Village on the way to the Yeongju World Punggi Ginseng Expo, so you want to see a Korean traditional village. I say that what is the best thing about living in Korea for a year. She says that everyone works hard and can experience many amazing things, new developments stand out and experience firsthand.

Seeing the students diligently making Slovakian food is like a miracle, and showing pictures and videos of the students making the food on her cellphones.

She says that when we come back from garden, she buys radish and cabbage seeds from the Nonghyup store and go to her hometown in Slovakia tomorrow to plant them in grandma's garden.

These conversations were strangely recreated in a dream at night.

오늘 갑자기 박철 총장님이 청와대 관람 가라고 표를 보내왔다. 속으로 오바마 대통령이 오면 함께 가면 더 좋을 거라고 생각했다.

그리고 낮에 슬로바키아 미녀교수와 학교 식당에서 비빔밥을 먹고 내 텃밭에 함께 가서 채소를 따고 물을 주었다. 사진을 찍어서 페이스북에 올린다고 하니 고향에 어머니가 내 페이스북에서 자기 사진을 보면 밭에서 일하는 복장이 아니라 웃으실 거라고 한다. 가는 도중에 가을에 다시 오면 영주세계풍기인삼엑스포에 가는 길에 아름다운 내 고향 무섬 전통마을에 꼭 오라고 하니 한국 전통 마을을 보고 싶다고 한다. 한국에서 일 년 살면서 무엇이 가장 좋으냐니까, 모두 열심히 일하고 여러 가지 놀라운 일들이, 새로운 발전이 눈에 띠고 직접 체험할 수 있어 좋다고 한다. 학생들이 열심히 슬로바키아 음식 만드는 것 보면 정말 기적 같다고 하면서 핸드폰에서 학생들이 음식 만드는 사진과 동영상을 보여준다.

돌아올 때 농협가게에서 무, 배추 씨앗을 사가지고 내일 모래 슬로바키아 고향 가서 할머니 텃밭에 심는 다고 한다.

 

이러한 대화가 밤에 이상하게 꿈으로 재현되었다.
